"Randy 9" was conceived for a collaborative exhibition at the end of 2019, following research and visits. The artwork repurposes second-hand electronic devices and children's electronic toys into unconventional musical instruments. Beyond static display, the installation includes on-the-spot improvised performances with artist Zhou Xinyu within the exhibition venue, utilizing these modified electronic instruments. In 2020, the work was also presented on campus in the form of a "Museum-like Audio Guide Device."

For the subsequent exhibition, "Echo Next Door," the consideration arose: Could there be more space for viewers to physically engage with the work when it is re-exhibited, detached from its original exhibition context? Ultimately, incorporating the format of tape recorders used by children in the 1990s for language learning, along with vocabulary cards, the sounds generated by these modified instruments were transcribed onto magnetic tapes. These tapes were affixed to cards bearing corresponding illustrations of the modified instruments. Viewers, guided by their personal intuition, swiped the machine from right to left at their chosen speed, triggering the reading and simultaneous playback of the transcribed sounds.

This interactive element, where the audience independently determines the reading speed, serves as a variable that introduces a sense of randomness when these modified instruments are played. It aims to bring about a bodily encounter with the unpredictable sounds for the operators as they interact with the instruments.
